Seven Days in Tenerife: A Practical One-Week Itinerary

Seven days in Tenerife gives you time for volcanic landscapes, mountain villages, historic towns and the coast. This itinerary combines Teide, Anaga and the island’s north with relaxed time in the south, grouping nearby places together so that each day feels like a visit rather than a drive.

How to plan seven days in Tenerife

This plan assumes seven full sightseeing days and access to a car. If your week includes arrival and departure, shorten those days to nearby coastal walks. Keep the order flexible: give Teide a suitable weather window and avoid Anaga’s mountain roads during severe weather.

For less driving, split your accommodation between the southwest and the north: three nights around Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos and four around Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna work well. One base is simpler, but means longer return journeys. Puerto de la Cruz suits northern sightseeing; Costa Adeje prioritises resort facilities and beach time.

Without a car, stay near a major bus station, reduce rural combinations and consider an organised Teide excursion. Check journeys through TITSA; mountain services need careful planning around the return departure.

Day 1: Settle in on the south coast

Start gently with Los Cristianos, Playa de Las Vistas and a section of the coastal promenade towards Playa de las Américas. Allow two to three hours for walking and stops, then spend the afternoon at the beach. Around Costa Adeje, Playa Fañabé or Playa del Duque offer another convenient introduction.

If wildlife is a priority, replace part of the beach day with a whale-watching trip. Choose an authorised operator and consult Tenerife’s whale-watching sustainability charter. Check the departure harbour and trip length before booking; a boat excursion deserves its own time rather than being squeezed between distant stops.

Day 2: Explore Teide National Park

Reserve a full day for Teide. From the south, an approach through Vilaflor reveals pine forest before the open volcanic scenery of Las Cañadas. Stop at designated viewpoints and explore the Roques de García area, choosing a short out-and-back walk or the longer circuit according to conditions and fitness.

The national park is rewarding without ascending the mountain. Lava formations, broad plains and views of Teide provide enough interest for an unhurried day. Bring food, water, sun protection and warm layers: temperatures at altitude can differ sharply from the coast.

If taking the Teide cable car, book ahead and check operating conditions. The ticket does not include permission to reach the summit. Consult Tenerife ON for trail reservations, equipment requirements and restrictions. A summit hike needs separate planning; it is not an automatic addition to this sightseeing day.

Day 3: La Laguna and the Anaga mountains

Spend the morning in La Laguna’s historic centre, walking around Plaza del Adelantado and the streets of La Carrera and San Agustín. Allow roughly two hours, longer if you enter churches or museums.

Continue to Cruz del Carmen for a forest walk, then choose whether to return towards La Laguna or extend the day through Taganana towards the northern coast. The coastal extension makes this a long outing, particularly from southern accommodation; leave time for the winding roads and daylight return.

For a gentler day, keep to La Laguna and the forest. For mountain and coastal scenery, shorten the city visit. El Pijaral requires advance authorisation, so check the official Anaga permit information before choosing that walk. Treat exposed northern beaches as scenic stops when swimming conditions are unsuitable.

Day 4: Santa Cruz and Las Teresitas

Explore Santa Cruz in the morning, linking Plaza de España, the streets around La Noria and Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África. Check market opening hours if it is central to your visit. Architecture enthusiasts can add the waterfront around the Auditorio de Tenerife.

After lunch, continue to San Andrés and Las Teresitas. This combination gives the beach a proper afternoon instead of adding it to an already crowded Anaga itinerary. Walk into San Andrés for a meal or a look around the village.

Las Teresitas pairs naturally with Santa Cruz and nearby San Andrés.

Bus 910 connects Santa Cruz with the beach area; verify current stops and departures with TITSA. At busy times, using the bus avoids searching for a parking space.

Day 5: La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz

Begin in La Orotava, allowing two to three hours for its sloping historic streets, traditional balconies and the surroundings of the Church of La Concepción. The town rewards walking, although its gradients matter for visitors with limited mobility.

Continue to Puerto de la Cruz for lunch and an afternoon around Plaza del Charco, the old harbour and the waterfront. Choose one substantial extra: the Botanical Garden for plants or Lago Martiánez for time beside the seawater pools. Check opening arrangements and admission before visiting.

Loro Parque is another option if it matches your interests, but allow most of a day and replace this programme rather than attempting everything together.

Day 6: Garachico and Icod de los Vinos

Spend the morning in Garachico, exploring Plaza de la Libertad, the historic streets and the lava coastline around El Caletón. Natural pools are weather-dependent: rough seas or local closures can make swimming inappropriate even under clear skies.

Continue to Icod de los Vinos for the historic centre and the famous dragon tree. Decide whether to enter Parque del Drago or view the tree from the nearby public square. Leave time for lunch rather than collecting additional towns.

If Cueva del Viento is your priority, reserve through its official website and build the day around the guided visit. It is a substantial alternative, not a quick roadside stop.

Day 7: Masca and Los Gigantes

Visit Masca for its hamlet setting among the ridges of Teno, then continue towards Los Gigantes for lunch and coastal views. Allow a full day: distances conceal slow mountain driving, and parking in Masca is limited. Consider the bus from Santiago del Teide if you prefer to avoid driving the narrow approach.

Visiting the hamlet and hiking Masca Gorge are different plans. The gorge is a demanding booked activity with compulsory transport arrangements. Read the official access requirements before reserving and dedicate the day to it.

Finish the sightseeing version with a harbour stroll or time at Playa de los Guíos when conditions permit. Leave Punta de Teno for another visit unless you replace, rather than extend, this programme.

Adapt the week to your interests

For more beach time, replace a northern sightseeing day with El Médano and La Tejita; expect wind on this exposed coast. Families wanting Siam Park should similarly substitute a full day. Keen walkers can replace city visits with carefully chosen trails instead of adding hikes after long drives.

Book restricted activities first, then fit the remaining days around weather and location. Check trail alerts before setting out, obey beach flags and park only in permitted spaces. Seven days works best when you keep the major contrasts—Teide, Anaga, historic towns and the sea—while leaving room to enjoy each one.
